Overview

Thomas Struth (*1954, Geldern, Germany) is one of the most important artists on the international art scene and one of the leading representatives of Bernd and Hilla Becher's renowned Düsseldorf School of Photography. Since his first gallery exhibition at Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle in 1980, he has been an essential part of the gallery's program. For 50 years now, the artist has been exploring the world through thematic series of works - in the early 1970s initially through the medium of painting and later primarily through photography. Precise, analytical and highly sensitive, he created groups of works that reveal complex interrelationships between people, nature and the technoid. His black and white and color street photographs, family portraits, nature portraits, museum photographs and images of places of devotion, industry and research of industrial and research sites reflect the relationship between the public and private spheres and manifest the seemingly inexhaustible human imagination and capacity for innovation that shape the world of today and tomorrow. His images - characterized by their sculptural objecthood and contemplative character - reveal glimpses of the present, past and future and have long since become icons of photographic history.
